Heeey! I’m Shemika Harmitt, creator and founder of Prime Beauty Cosmetics. Some of you may have seen me on our Instagram page or received thank you notes and emails from me after a purchase. Now we’ve added a blog to our site and I wanted this first post to tell you a little bit more about me and the why behind the brand.

Prime Beauty Cosmetics launched on March 29, 2018 and it has been an amazing journey for the past year and a half. The brand was created both out of my love for women who look like me and my frustration with an industry that does not appreciate us.

I love beauty dearly and I’ve had a career in Beauty Public Relations since 2011. Since that time I’ve witnessed just how white washed the industry is. Walking into agencies and not seeing a single person of color, being backstage at fashion shows and dark skin models having to provide their own foundation, strolling the cosmetic aisles and not finding shades that match me for various products. The list goes on and on. Things have progressed along the way, but there is still a long way to go.

I created Prime Beauty to give this industry an extra push in the right direction. I want women of color to see their beautiful brown skin celebrated, catered to and loved. We are beauty. Our beauty needs are primary. Not secondary. This is why we exist.
